About
The desigNYC collective was formed by group of designers and design advocates with the mission of helping nonprofit and community groups in need of design services connect with professional, pro bono design resources. We were inspired by President Obama's and Mayor Bloomberg's Service initiatives and other groups doing great work here in the city and beyond, including:
- 1% Program of Public Architecture
- Architecture for Humanity—Open Architecture Network
- Design Trust for Public Space
- Ioby
- The Center for Urban Pedagogy's Making Policy Public Program
- NYC Service
- Taproot Foundation
- VolunteerMatch
Frequently Asked Questions
What is pro bono design service?
The definition of pro bono is "professional expertise made accessible to organizations serving the public good." Pro bono services must leverage the core competencies and expertise of the professional(s) engaged to meet the client’s need. These services are typically provided without the expectation of a fee.
What kinds of organizations can apply for design services?
Any type of nonprofit, community, civic, or social purpose organization can apply. Ideally, applicants will have 501(c)(3) status, fiscal sponsorship, or be working closely with a government agency.
Who will be selecting the projects?
The desigNYC team will be reviewing submissions and selecting the first round of pilot projects. Our goal is to eventually create an open network where organizations and designers can connect in a more direct fashion.
Who will be performing the design work?
Designers within the desigNYC network will perform the work in close collaboration with the selected organizations. If your firm is interested in donating pro bono design services to a desigNYC project, please fill out our design services form.
Will the organization be responsible for any fees?
Designers will not receive any fees for their services. There may, however, be costs involved with implementing the design solutions.
